I’ve been lucky to have had a life in music, and I can trace my good fortune to several formative events. One was working at Tulagi, the famed nightclub on University Hill in Boulder, while I was attending journalism school at CU in the early ’70s. Tulagi had scheduled a concert with Randy Newman, one of my nascent musical idols, so I introduced myself to Herb Kauvar, the owner of Tulagi and the Sink, both ground zero for Colorado’s live music scene in the ’60s and ’70s. I posited that I’d sure like to write press releases for the shows. Herb was amenable to the idea, but what he really needed was a bartender. So, pouring 3.2 beer for artists from Bonnie Raitt to Tommy Bolin was my introduction to the fabulous music biz. More gratifying was that the Kauvar family pretty much adopted this Top 40 goy from Arvada. Herb’s wife Gilda introduced me to bagels, cream cheese and lox—which at times became a bigger passion than music. Herb touched a lot of people’s lives before passing away in October 2020 at age 93, and I was privileged to host an interview with him as part of his last public outing. The resulting CoME podcast will premiere as part of a memorial celebration of life being held at the Sink on Saturday, October 23 at noon, All Sink rats, Tule crew members and other Hill-era denizens are welcome to attend; commemorative “Not to be took from the Sink” t-shirts will be handed out. Please contact Jim Kauvar at jkauvar@yahoo.com for more information.
